October 2009 Read-a-thon Sign-up post

deweys-readathonbuttonIt’s almost here! The October 2009 Read-a-thon is only a little over 3 weeks away, so now is the time for those interested in participating to officially sign up.

The  Read-a-thon will start: October 24th  at 5am Pacific (1pm GMT). You can click over to the start times page to check the starting time in your timezone. Remember that if it’s more convenient to you, you could  start either earlier or later, as well as participate for only part of the 24 hours. Very few people make it through the entire 24-hour period without sleeping, so don’t let that discourage you! Sleep is definitely allowed.

For more information on the Read-a-thon, you can read our FAQ. If you have a question that isn’t answered there, you can leave us a comment or e-mail DeweyReadathon at gmail. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible!

In the next day or two, we’re going to put up two Google Forms that those interested in hosting mini-challenges can fill in. If you’re new to the Read-a-thon and are wondering what these mini-challenge things are, please check our FAQ!

Also, if you’d like to donate a prize, please e-mail us at DeweyReadathon at gmail. It’d be very much appreciated! Here’s a list of the prizes donated for the April 2009 Read-a-thon in case you’re wondering what to donate.

    Unfortunately, I won’t be able to read for the read-a-thon challenge this time around as I’ll be taking classes most of the day, however I can and would like to participate as a cheerleader. Not sure exactly what time I’ll be available but definitely Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

    This will be my second time participating in the event but The Hub will also be out of town, so it will be a challenge but I’m up for it.

    So, I’d love to sign up, but there is a book signing that day I want to attend that will keep me from reading for a few hours in the afternoon. Is this kind of thing allowed? It looks like it is to me, but I want to make sure before signing up.

    I always enjoy doing these, although I never make the full 24 hours. It’s a chance to tell everyone that they can’t bother me at all that day because I just have to read. :)

    Mark: Sandra kind of answered your question, but I wanted to make sure you saw it: Yes, you’re allowed to be away from your book (not reading) for a few hours. If you can sleep, a book signing? Go for it!

    Wuhoah I had this massive panic that I was going to be at a bday celebration most of the afternoon and night (not a bad thing, but it seems something always seem to clash with read-a-thon in the run up) but turns out that’s the weekend after. So yay I’m going to read this time after a fun time cheerleading in April.

    I have tried to set up my teaching schedule so that I have all lessons plans completed – and no grading for the weekend of October 24 and 25. I have been looking forward to this since the last read-a-thon. I hope that my advanced planning will mean that I am able to actually more this go around!

    I hope to be able to do the whole 24 hours, but I work a graveyard shift just before the challenge (it actually starts when I am still at work). Luckily my job will allow me to read, but I hope I’m not too tired that I won’t be able to continue reading.

    The readathon falls on the last weekend of school vacation for me (in Newcastle, Australia). We have a few things on over the weekend, so I can’t even adjust the time to fit reading in more easily, so I’ve signed up as a cheerleader.     So, I’ll be busy most of the day on sat so I was thinking of being a cheerleader, but even though I read the FAQ I still am a little confused on one thing. If I were to host a mini-challenge, would I have to supply the prize, or would I just send the winner down to the prize list to chose a prize, or would I chose their prize from the list for them or what? Thanks for the help.

    Ok, so I started signing up in the reader section but it noted my name in the cheerleader section. How did that happen? Not that being a cheerleader wouldn’t be great but I don’t think I could do both, not this year anyway. Sorry for the trouble. Can’t wait to start reading.

    OMG!! i had never heard of this before!! Thank goodness for facebook and I found out in time. I’m a Dewey’s Read-a-thon virgin! Although, not in time to have not scheduled a dinner party for Sunday. Oh well, we all make sacrifices. Wait until my husband finds out! :) If he wants anything done, he may have to listen to an ebook! Oh crap! And I had just convinced him to take me out to dinner tomorrow night!
