October 2009 Read-a-thon Sign-up post
Oct 1st 2009trishOctober 2009
It’s almost here! The October 2009 Read-a-thon is only a little over 3 weeks away, so now is the time for those interested in participating to officially sign up.
The Read-a-thon will start: October 24th at 5am Pacific (1pm GMT). You can click over to the start times page to check the starting time in your timezone. Remember that if it’s more convenient to you, you could start either earlier or later, as well as participate for only part of the 24 hours. Very few people make it through the entire 24-hour period without sleeping, so don’t let that discourage you! Sleep is definitely allowed.
For more information on the Read-a-thon, you can read our FAQ. If you have a question that isn’t answered there, you can leave us a comment or e-mail DeweyReadathon at gmail. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible!
In the next day or two, we’re going to put up two Google Forms that those interested in hosting mini-challenges can fill in. If you’re new to the Read-a-thon and are wondering what these mini-challenge things are, please check our FAQ!
Also, if you’d like to donate a prize, please e-mail us at DeweyReadathon at gmail. It’d be very much appreciated! Here’s a list of the prizes donated for the April 2009 Read-a-thon in case you’re wondering what to donate.
Another thing you can do: Grab a button from the FAQ page, display it proudly, and help us spread the word.
To sign up to be a Reader, please use the Mr Linky below:
To sign up to be a Cheerleader (aka one of the not-so-secret superheroes of the read-a-thon) please fill the Mr. Linky below:
Remember that you’re more than welcome to be both. Each role is carefully explained in the FAQ. Let us know if you have any further questions!

Marieon 01 Oct 2009 at 12:48 pm 1I’m in! Can’t wait!
Heatheron 01 Oct 2009 at 12:52 pm 2Yay! I’m so excited!!!
Mareeon 01 Oct 2009 at 12:56 pm 3I’m in! Yay!
Jenon 01 Oct 2009 at 12:59 pm 4Unfortunately, I won’t be able to read for the read-a-thon challenge this time around as I’ll be taking classes most of the day, however I can and would like to participate as a cheerleader. Not sure exactly what time I’ll be available but definitely Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
Nymethon 01 Oct 2009 at 1:10 pm 5Jen, that’s too bad that you won’t be able to read
But we love cheerleaders! The Read-a-thon just wouldn’t be the same without them – thank you for signing up!
Tion 01 Oct 2009 at 1:21 pm 6This will be my second time participating in the event but The Hub will also be out of town, so it will be a challenge but I’m up for it.
Bart's Bookshelfon 01 Oct 2009 at 1:33 pm 7Yay! Can’t wait.
One of the joys of being the supervisor at work, is that I organise the rota. guess who is not working that particular weekend…
Markon 01 Oct 2009 at 3:20 pm 8So, I’d love to sign up, but there is a book signing that day I want to attend that will keep me from reading for a few hours in the afternoon. Is this kind of thing allowed? It looks like it is to me, but I want to make sure before signing up.
Sandraon 01 Oct 2009 at 3:24 pm 9I always enjoy doing these, although I never make the full 24 hours. It’s a chance to tell everyone that they can’t bother me at all that day because I just have to read.
Kathrynon 01 Oct 2009 at 3:29 pm 10I have never done one of these before and I am excited to try it. It sounds like a challenge, but a fun one!
Kathrynon 01 Oct 2009 at 3:31 pm 11I accidentally posted myself twice up above under reader… once as Kathryn and once as Kathryn’s Book Nook. I had forgotten that I signed up earlier. I didn’t know how to remove on of them. If anyone could tell me, I will take one down.
Beaon 01 Oct 2009 at 3:57 pm 12I would love to participate! I’m just discovering this whole alternate universe of book blogging, but thus far it looks FABULOUS!
wordlilyon 01 Oct 2009 at 4:00 pm 13Mark: Sandra kind of answered your question, but I wanted to make sure you saw it: Yes, you’re allowed to be away from your book (not reading) for a few hours. If you can sleep, a book signing? Go for it!
wordlilyon 01 Oct 2009 at 4:01 pm 14Kathryn: I took care of that.
Alyceon 01 Oct 2009 at 5:07 pm 15This will be my first read-a-thon, and I’m very excited about it! Each of the past few times I’ve wanted to participate I had something else going on.
Kathrynon 01 Oct 2009 at 6:11 pm 16Thank you!!!
Jodieon 02 Oct 2009 at 12:34 am 17Wuhoah I had this massive panic that I was going to be at a bday celebration most of the afternoon and night (not a bad thing, but it seems something always seem to clash with read-a-thon in the run up) but turns out that’s the weekend after. So yay I’m going to read this time after a fun time cheerleading in April.
Mollyon 02 Oct 2009 at 3:21 am 18I have tried to set up my teaching schedule so that I have all lessons plans completed – and no grading for the weekend of October 24 and 25. I have been looking forward to this since the last read-a-thon. I hope that my advanced planning will mean that I am able to actually more this go around!
Meghanon 02 Oct 2009 at 4:29 am 19Yay! I can’t wait! Hoping to stay up later this time!
Kristinaon 02 Oct 2009 at 5:04 am 20This will be my second read-a-thon! I can’t wait!!
Stephanieon 02 Oct 2009 at 8:21 am 21This is my first read-a-thon and I cannot wait!
Valerieon 02 Oct 2009 at 8:41 am 22I really enjoyed the first time I participated (this spring), and am looking forward to this one. I have a lot of books to catch up on! Don’t we all, though
?
Tami & Dave Erwinon 02 Oct 2009 at 2:19 pm 23Looking forward to our first read-a-thon and encouraging other couples to read together.
Tami & Daveon 02 Oct 2009 at 2:40 pm 24Somehow in our enthusiasm we got registered twice (#’s 50-51). Since there are two of us reading but sharing a blog, please feel free to leave us as two separate entries or delete one of us. Sorry for the confusion.
Twigaon 02 Oct 2009 at 3:56 pm 25Woo hoo! I’m psyched!
Alexaon 03 Oct 2009 at 4:10 am 26As I have a new baby, no 24 hour reading for me but I would love to drop in (at nap times) to cheer people on
katrinaon 03 Oct 2009 at 4:16 am 27I tried to send an email but it won’t work – for some reason my email always fails on gmail addresses(?) anyway I wanted to say that i’d like to enter some homemade bookmarks as prizes. 3 sets of 3 handmade bookmarks. I can be contacted at katrinathomas_ukATyahooDOTcoDOTuk if you need to contact me
Arielleon 03 Oct 2009 at 7:46 am 28I just signed up! I took me a bit to decide because I’ve never done anything like this before, but this sounds like it’s going to be fun!
bookmagicon 03 Oct 2009 at 8:15 am 29I am excited to participate in this!!
Sheila (Bookjourney)on 03 Oct 2009 at 10:00 am 30I am kind of excited – my first read-a-thon…. except maybe back in grade school and that wasnt 24 hours straight through LOL….
Looking forward to this!

Amandaon 03 Oct 2009 at 5:46 pm 37Okay, I just signed up to be a cheerleader as well as a reader. I’ve been an unofficial cheerleader in the past and am a little worried about biting off more than I can chew this time…but I’m here to help!
Beth Fon 04 Oct 2009 at 4:00 am 38I’m definitely in. Can’t wait!
Aartion 04 Oct 2009 at 8:15 am 39I’ve never participated in the Read-a-thon before as it’s always intimidated me. But as I planned on participating in BBAW and then kind of let that slide… I feel like maybe this is my moment
Shondaon 04 Oct 2009 at 12:12 pm 40I’m looking forward to this. This will be my first time participating. I’m currently writing my list of books to choose from.
The Wandering Readeron 04 Oct 2009 at 2:56 pm 41This is absolutely wonderful! Just hearing about this makes me smile. To know that a love of reading is alive and well… well, it’s just awesome!
I’m a little intimidated, but would love to try and participate.
Rhiainon 04 Oct 2009 at 5:15 pm 42I signed up to be a cheerleader. I’ve never participated in the Read-A-Thon in any capacity before, so this will be interesting.
raychon 04 Oct 2009 at 5:40 pm 43If I am conscious and not TOTALLY HIGH, I will be there.
Caitlinon 04 Oct 2009 at 7:05 pm 44Yay!
I’ve never done this before, but since I tend to spend the vast majority of my weekends reading this’ll just be an excuse to stay up longer. I’m sure my husband will be thrilled!
“No, sweetie, I can’t turn out the light yet – it’s the 24-hour-read-a-thon.” Heh.
Tifon 04 Oct 2009 at 8:07 pm 45I can’t wait!!! It’s my first read-a-thon and I’m so excited!!! Yippee!!! Now, let’s see if the kids will cooperate too since Daddy will be working!!
Alitaon 04 Oct 2009 at 8:53 pm 46I think I will ease into my very first read-a-thon with some cheering! I’m super excited about being involved. This is going to be a good day, I can just feel it
Ryanon 05 Oct 2009 at 4:30 am 47I didn’t quite get the full 24 hours in last time so I’m giving it another go.
Fyreflyon 05 Oct 2009 at 11:41 am 48Hoooray! It’s already on my calendar.
I may have a birthday party to attend somewhere around hour 12, but I will cram in as much reading as possible on other side of it.
Also, I’ve got a good idea for a mini-challenge to host this time around.
prongson 05 Oct 2009 at 12:33 pm 49Both Padfoot and Prongs are def down! We are aiming for all 24 hours…god help us! Will also be doing a giveaway!
Tara SGon 05 Oct 2009 at 1:11 pm 50I’m so excited!! Even though I’m hosting my first book club meeting Oct 25… I’m still shooting for the whole 24 hours… I can just nap afterward on Sunday afternoon, right?
Markon 05 Oct 2009 at 1:11 pm 51I’m going to sign up. But I will be out and about much of the afternoon that day. I’ll do what I can to read, read, read that day, however.
Ann-Kat (Today, I Read...)on 05 Oct 2009 at 2:11 pm 52I didn’t get a chance to participate last year because I found out about it too late, so I’m looking forward to hunkering down and reading like there’s no tomorrow come Oct. 24th.
Thanks for putting this together–it’s going to be a ton of fun!
Kathrynon 05 Oct 2009 at 2:40 pm 53I hope to be able to do the whole 24 hours, but I work a graveyard shift just before the challenge (it actually starts when I am still at work). Luckily my job will allow me to read, but I hope I’m not too tired that I won’t be able to continue reading.
Melissaon 05 Oct 2009 at 5:20 pm 54This seems like fun. This will be my first time participating, and it sounds blissful!
vickie bon 06 Oct 2009 at 12:05 am 55first time participating im glad its on a weekend cant wait!!!!!
Julieon 06 Oct 2009 at 12:36 pm 56Can’t wait to cheer y’all on!!! I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone’s reading too! I’m excited to participate and hope to do more in the future.
Natalie aka Writerwizardon 06 Oct 2009 at 3:08 pm 57This looks awesome. I’ll love an excuse to spend a whole 24 hours reading. Pretty sure I can do it. I managed about 16 just last weekend. Lol. Didn’t know about the readathon then, but something must have been preparing me for it.

fantaghiro23on 07 Oct 2009 at 9:30 am 60Really enjoyed the last readathon, so I’m back for more.:) I loved the idea that people all over the world are reading “together.”
Nymethon 07 Oct 2009 at 1:24 pm 61Hi Heather – I’ve fixed it for you
Maria Kristicon 07 Oct 2009 at 7:18 pm 62My first Readathon, yay! I love to read, and this is going to be so much fun! I signed up as both a reader and cheerleader. Not sure if I can make the whole 24 hours, but we’ll see. I’ll track my progress on Twitter with the #readathon hash tag. Thinking about what to read…Thanks for the great event!
dianeon 09 Oct 2009 at 7:56 am 63I didn’t think I could do this challenge but I decided, “what do I have to lose but a little sleep”. Thanks so much
Gina (BookDragon's Lair)on 09 Oct 2009 at 5:01 pm 64This is my first “set hours” challenge and I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t fail!
Kristenon 10 Oct 2009 at 5:27 am 65I so wish I could do this. But I’m getting married the day it starts… lol.
Anjelaon 10 Oct 2009 at 11:15 am 66Linked here by a friend! I’ll be donating $10 to Heifer International for every hour I spend reading (up to a maximum of a two-sheep donation if I make it all 24 hours) and the cover price of everything I get through will go to Reading Is Fundamental.
Michelleon 10 Oct 2009 at 1:25 pm 67This is my first read-a-thon and I’m very excited!
Ronnicaon 10 Oct 2009 at 5:36 pm 68Based on various responsibilities I have Saturday afternoon/evening and my desire to be rested up before church Sunday, I’ll be participating, but basically 14 hours before everyone else. I’ll overlap with the group as much as possible!
madeleineon 10 Oct 2009 at 7:04 pm 69I might not be able to finish the full 24 hours, but will do 12 hours or more.
Susan @ Reading Upside Downon 11 Oct 2009 at 1:05 am 70The readathon falls on the last weekend of school vacation for me (in Newcastle, Australia). We have a few things on over the weekend, so I can’t even adjust the time to fit reading in more easily, so I’ve signed up as a cheerleader. Hopefully I will be able to hope online regularly to cheer everyone else on.
Walkeron 11 Oct 2009 at 8:10 am 71Yay, just signed up! I love binge reading, honest!
Melissaon 11 Oct 2009 at 11:03 am 72It looks interesting; don’t know if I will do, as I quite busy with things at the moment and my life feels quite hectic at the moment.
Jesson 11 Oct 2009 at 7:08 pm 73Yeah, I’ve decided to jump in the deep end. Due to time differences and previous engagements on the Sunday, I think I’m going to spend from the Friday evening til Saturday evening doing the readathon. Looking forward to it!
bunny m.on 11 Oct 2009 at 10:17 pm 74as long as i can manage to wake up on time the day of the challenge (7 am in chicago! ack!), i think i can do this! exciting!

Mandyon 22 Oct 2009 at 4:45 pm 117So, I’ll be busy most of the day on sat so I was thinking of being a cheerleader, but even though I read the FAQ I still am a little confused on one thing. If I were to host a mini-challenge, would I have to supply the prize, or would I just send the winner down to the prize list to chose a prize, or would I chose their prize from the list for them or what? Thanks for the help.
Tifon 22 Oct 2009 at 7:21 pm 118I am so sorry!! I totally just linky’d in the wrong one!!! I have already signed up and totally meant to link to my reading post. Please feel free to delete that last one (#332)!! Sorry again!!
Nymethon 22 Oct 2009 at 11:16 pm 119Just Someome: We can delete you from the list of cheerleaders if you want to, though I hope you’ll stick around and realize just how fun cheerleading is
Mandy: We would provide a prize from the list if the host couldn’t offer one themselves, but unfortunately all spots for mini-challenges have already been filled. There’s always next April, though!
Tif, done!
Petuniaon 23 Oct 2009 at 6:45 am 120Ok, so I started signing up in the reader section but it noted my name in the cheerleader section. How did that happen? Not that being a cheerleader wouldn’t be great but I don’t think I could do both, not this year anyway. Sorry for the trouble. Can’t wait to start reading.
