Well, well, well. You made it through! Give yourselves a pat on the back… or big cup of froyo… you pick… to celebrate another successful Read-A-Thon!

Read-A-Thon Books Read Database

You guys took my mantra to heart and really ROCKED THIS ‘THON, YO! So far we have 505 entries into the database form, for a total of 123,528 pages read. We’ll accept your entries into this form until Tuesday at midnight my time. A little ambiguous? Tuesday, October 25th until 11:59PM Mountain Standard Time (note: not DST, us Arizonans? We don’t believe in that stuff). That’s UTC -7.

And for the first time ever, I’m happy to announce that tomorrow, we’ll have a link round-up for those of you who review the books you read during the ‘thon! It will remain live until the next Read-A-Thon, so take your time and do things according to your schedule. You don’t have to be a blogger to link your review… just post it on Amazon, or B&N, or Goodreads, and link us to that review if you want. We think this will be a nice resource for all of our readers because we often see someone reading a book during the ‘thon that we want to know about and mean to follow up, but forget where the blog was or who was reading it. Like the Database, this is completely optional and not a requirement to particiapte.

April 2012 Read-A-Thon: April 21, 2012

Oh, and exciting news. The April 2012 Read-A-Thon will be held on April 21st, 2012. So, mark your calendars and rearrange your schedules! It’ll be a nice break for those of us in the US because it’s the Saturday after Tax Day!

We’ll be putting up some sign-ups for Volunteers soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

If you are a librarian, or a book recommender, a bookstore employee, or a journalist, please let as many people as possible know about this date. Sign-ups are scheduled to go live March 1st next year. Prize Donations for the next Read-A-Thon will start at the end of the week, and the form will be located on the Prizes Page (link located on the top links bar on the site)

We need someone to revamp the start times pages into UTC format… so if anyone has the time and/or passion to put that information together, please contact us at the deweyreadathon – gmail address.

Prize Angels

It costs approximately $11 to ship a book overseas from the US. Since we do not take on advertisers and a lot of our prizes are not shipped internationally by our donors, we have to take up a collection. If you can donate even one dollar, that will really help us be able to ship. Right now, we have enough to ship almost 2 books to winners internationally. And we need enough for at least 12. If you have already donated, THANK YOU! If you haven’t and you want to help, here’s how to donate:

1. Log-In to PayPal.
2. Click the Send Money Tab
3. Enter shes10@gmail.com into the To Field.
4. Click the Personal Tab.
5. Select Gift.
6. Fill in the amount you’re giving.
7. Click Continue and follow the directions.

Suggestions

As much as we want to read all of the end of event memes, we miss quite a few, either from faulty links or bad tracking skills on our part. If you have a suggestion that you are passionate about and think would make the ‘thon better, please email us at deweyreadathon – gmail – com because we want to know what you think.

Prizes

If you have won a prize from us, today is the last day to claim it. Remember, first come, first serve.

Mini-Challenge Winners Announced

The following have one mini-challenges and should have been contacted by the MC host already, but we still want to announce them here, and I think this is the last of them.

I think I’m getting to the point where anything is funny, you guys. Either that or this video^ is hi-larious.

So, what else does WebMD suggest for staying awake, you are no doubt wondering? How about deep breathing?

Sitting up straight, try this exercise up to 10 times:

With one hand on your belly just below your ribs and the other on your chest, inhale deeply through your nose and let your belly push your hand out. Your chest should not move.

Breathe out through lips pursed as if you were whistling. You can use the hand on your belly to help push air out.

Did that help? Let me know…

Biz-nas!

Did you know that one in every 1/2 prize doesn’t get sent because shipping is too expensive? It’s true, or it would be if that made any mathematical sense. But for only one dollar a day–or really, whatever you want to donate!–you can help these prizes reach their homes and bring a big grin to readers all over the world! Won’t you help?

Still going, Readathoners? Excellent, because I haz moar tips to keep you reading even if you don’t want to. BUT YOU MUST!

Tip 4: Move According to WebMD, someone paid researchers to determine moving was a good way to stay awake. Thanks, Science!

Tip 5: Keep the temperature cool Or exercise outside! Win-win!

Tip 6: Eat Your body needs energy to keep going, especially when it’s reaallly tired. Eat something that’s high in protein for energy, but low in carbs. Here are some suggestions from WebMD (again):

Peanut butter on a whole wheat cracker or celery sticks

Yogurt and a handful or nuts or fresh fruit (Greek yogurt is higher in protein and a better choice if you have it)

Baby carrots with a low-fat cream cheese dip

What are some of your favorite keep-going snacks? Let me know in the comments!

Now, onto business:

Mini-Challenges

Get Up Offa That Thang–Kimberly‘s hosting this challenge, which I’m going to guess involves exercise (thank god for spell check, because I cannot spell that word). Another weird coincidence! It’s like we plan this out or something, I swears.

Winners Announced

Among the many cheerleaders who are bravely staying up late to give us all motivation are: Holly, Rebecca, Rena, and Care

C from Délaissé Blog is donating her prize. Congrats, to Katherine @ KatenRead

Winner of the AKA Challenge (sorry this is so late) is Crissy from Homesteading In the Burbs

Chose your prizes from the list and then e-mail your choices and snail mail addy to deweyreadathon at gmail dot com

I learned some good tips on how to stay awake when you’re really really tired that I am more than happy to share with you now. Of course, it isn’t the middle of the night everywhere the Readathon is happening; so think of these more as tips to keep you going through the end of hour 24.

Tip 1: Keep drinking! After 2 A.M., coffee might make you jittery and might stop you from going to sleep after the Readathon is over. However, it is a good idea to drink a lot of water, tea, or eat fruit that’s high in water content, according to WebMD, because “dehydration causes fatigue,” not to mention bad skin.

Tip 2: Converse with the peoples Talking with people will keep your brain engaged and alert. If no one’s awake to talk to, try heading over to twitter and cheering on other Readathoners!

Tip 3: Alternate tasks Doing one thing for a long time can also cause fatigue. If you’re nodding off over your book, try doing something else! May I suggest some lovely mini-challenges?

Mini-Challenges

Reading Zombies–Who’s hosting this challenge? Oh, it’s me, what a coincidence!
“Zombify” one of your Readathon books in the style of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies by editing the cover art or writing a zombified adaptation synopsis.

It is now midnight my time, which means it’s Hour 19! Normally I’d be going to bed right about now, but I’ve done the unthinkable and had a late afternoon cup of coffee. Woah now! I haven’t had more than one cup of coffee per day for over a year, so this is exciting. I mean, I’m still pretty tired. But I’m more awake than I’d usually be!

In celebration of my amazing accomplishment, have a song about coffee from Sarah Vaughn. It’s not as fast-paced as the other songs I’ve posted, but I think it fits this time of night (or day, depending on where you are) pretty well:
This makes me sad.

Winners

Three of you lucky people who are still reading have won a prize! Aren’t you glad you stayed up? The three winners are:

That is both a tiny and a HUGE amount of time. It’s plenty of time for reading more books, but only a tiny amount of time (relatively) until you can pass out and sleep for 12 hours.

But for now, y’all need to WAKE UP!

I have brought more motivation for you to stay awake. This time it’s even book-related! It is, in fact, Paperback Writer by The Beatles:

Hiya! I’m Anastasia of Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog (and @birdbrainbb, if you’re on Twitter), and I’ll be your host for hours 17 through 20. I like chocolate and coffee and cats, and though I live in New Mexico at the moment I’ll be moving to California soon. Huzzah!

You may remember me from the Spring 2011 readathon, where I wooed you with Blast Hardcheese and OK Go. This time around I’ve got many shiny things to lure you into <s>my clutches</s> staying awake longer.

Right about now you’re probably wishing you hadn’t had that fifth can of Red Bull and that you’d never started this stupid readathon thing. OR you’re wide awake and perky and have got your second wind back! Either way, I find that cheerful music makes me more awake than not, so here’s something for everyone who is reading this now:
